Overview

Groningen, with a population of approximately 233,000, is the largest city in the northern Netherlands and a thriving student hub. It is home to the University of Groningen, one of the country's oldest and most prestigious institutions. Over 25% of the people are students, which contributes to the dynamic atmosphere. Groningen has a combination of antique landmarks like the Martinitoren and modern attractions like the Groninger Museum. Its wide bike infrastructure and vibrant city centre make it an excellent choice for students to live and explore.

Groningen, the bustling capital of the northern province, is a young city propelled by a strong student population from the University of Groningen. Martinitoren

The Martinitoren, or Martini Tower, is Groningen's tallest church steeple and one of its oldest, dating back to the 15th century. Climbing the tower provides excellent views of the city.

Groninger Museum

The Groninger Museum, known for its striking, modern style, shows current art as well as local history. Established in 1874, it is the city's lively cultural centre.

Prinsentuin

The Prinsentuin is a Renaissance-style garden founded in 1626. It includes a rose garden, a herb garden, and lovely hedge formations, making it a pleasant escape in the city centre.

Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is a non-profit international student organisation. Their mission is to represent international students, thus providing opportunities for cultural understanding and self-development under the principle of Students Helping Students.

AIESEC is a global platform for young people to explore and develop their leadership potential. They are a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation run by students and recent graduates of institutions of higher education. Its members are interested in world issues, leadership and management.

SIB Groningen hosts lectures, symposia, and conferences on Monday nights. They cover worldwide subjects like politics, law, the environment, terrorism, economics, and human rights.

Simplon

Simplon provides flexible and groundbreaking programming in the fields of pop music, culture, and lifestyle to young people in Groningen and the surrounding areas. With a large and small hall, Simplon hosts two hundred events and activities annually. Simplon is the most prominent platform for urban and hip-hop culture in the Northern Netherlands, serving as a pioneer in the programming of dance and electronic music.

Groninger Forum

The Forum, located in the centre of Groningen, is available seven days a week for you to dream away while watching a movie, participate in a talk show, see an exhibition, borrow materials, open your laptop, take a course, or simply grab a newspaper and croissant.

Vera Groningen

VERA is Groningen's centre for pop culture, commonly known as the Club for the International Pop Underground. They were formerly a student organisation, which is where the name came from: Veri Et Recti Amici (True And Sincere Friends). Nowadays, it is a full-fledged music venue.
